Dr. Aminuddin was born in Tg. Gemok, Rompin, Pahang and obtained his first degree in Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from Columbia University in the City of New York in May 1989. He later pursued his postgraduate studies at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. He received his MSc degree in Hydraulic Engineering in October 1990 and completed his doctoral study in December 1993 specializing in Sediment Transport. He also spent nine months during his postgraduate studies at an international research company namely the HR Wallingford, Oxford, UK. Dr. Aminuddin is a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) since 17th January 1994. He is presently the Deputy Director of River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) since 1st July 2001. His main research interests are Open Channel Hydraulics, Sediment Transport, and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). Since 1997 Dr. Aminuddin has obtained several grants and funding from Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia, Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB). Under his guidance as Main Supervisor, 4 Ph.D. and 15 M.Sc students completed their graduate degrees in Civil Engineering. Subsequently Dr. Aminuddin obtained his promotion as an Associate Professor in 1st April 2002 and Full Professor in 14th August 2007. Among major research projects completed by REDAC are the Application of Bio-Ecological Drainage Systems or BIOECODS in Malaysia, River Sediment Data Collection and Analysis, Peak Flow Attenuation using Infiltration Engineering Systems and Storage Tank, and four Eight Malaysian Plan IRPA grant projects. Recent studies include River Sand Mining Capacity in Malaysia, Design Options of the Flood Mitigation Plan of River Muda, River Inventory and Monitoring Program, and Erosion and Sediment Control in Malaysia. Overall, REDAC has received research grants totaling over RM 20 million for the past ten years. Recently, REDAC’s Profile highlighting the achievements from 2001 until 2011 was launched during Rivers 2011 conference held in Penang. Dr. Aminuddin is also active in professional organisations and has been appointed as an exco member for the Malaysian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (MANCID) and Sewer System and Processes Working Group (SSPWG) under the auspices of International Water Association (IWA) and International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR)’s Joint Committee on Urban Drainage. Presently Dr. Aminuddin is an Advisory Board Member for the International Journal River Basin Management (JRBM), published by IAHR. He is also the Advisor for the IAHR Student Chapter – Universiti Sains Malaysia which was officially launched during Rivers’04 – 1st International Conference on Managing Rivers in the 21st Century: Issues and Challenges, in September 2004. Dr. Aminuddin is also presently an Executive Committee member for the Asia Pacific Division (APD), IAHR beginning 2009. Dr. Aminuddin has published over 100 articles in journal and conference proceedings at international and local levels. He is also appointed as referee for international and national journals including Urban Water Journal, IWA Journal of Water Science and Technology, ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, ASCE Journal of Irrigation and Drainage, IAHR Journal of River Basin Management, and ICE UK Water Management Journal. He was also appointed as an organizer and an Invited Speaker for the Special Technical Session on Bio-Ecological Drainage System which was held during the 6th International Conference on Hydroscience and Engineering at Brisbane, Australia in June 2004. Dr Aminuddin is the Secretary of the organizing committee of Rivers’04 (Penang) Rivers’07 (Kuching) and Rivers 2011 (Penang). A special issue of ICE Water Management on River Modelling and Flood Mitigation: Malaysian Perspectives was published in the first issue of Volume 162, February 2009. Dr. Aminuddin has received several national awards for the BIOECODS project including Perak Foundation Excellence in Engineering Research Award 2001, CIDB Construction Innovation and Invention Award 2001 and USM’s Sanggar Sanjung (Hall of Fame) in 2001 and 2002. He also receives the 2004 Perak Foundation Excellence in Engineering Research Award for the Flood Risk Map project. He was presented with the USM Excellence Service Award in 2002 and 2003.
